"A Letter to the Motocross Community from Ryan Mills #167
I felt I needed to write this letter to the industry, fans and friends to let you all know about some scary and damaging things that are going on in my life right now.
Someone created a Ryan Mills Facebook profile and has been pretending to be me for a long time. At first I let it go because I figured some people do weird and stupid things. Then it came to my attention that this crazy person was truly pretending to be me, having detailed conversations with sponsors, friends and girls and posting pictures of me that I don't even have. Anyone who thinks they are friends with me, Ryan Mills, on Facebook is wrong. It is not me. I have never had a Facebook profile and I am not on MySpace either.
This is damaging to my character, reputation and relationships. I am not the same 17 year old kid that I used to be. I am working my butt off trying to recover from my broken back last year and being a privateer. My days consist of working on my own bike, figuring out how to get to the next race and practicing yoga with my longtime girlfriend and trainer, Regina.
I do not know how crazy this person is. My motorcycle was stolen 6 weeks ago from my house. Four weeks later we were broken into again and someone stole all of Regina's jewelry and our watches. We are getting emails and texts from other girls who thought they were dating me but are now being threatened by this person. This is also extremely disrespectful to my relationship with Regina, my trainer and future wife.
Please REMOVE RYAN MILLS from your Facebook. It is NOT me. If anyone has info on who this is, please call the NY State Police in Gardiner at 845.256.0536.
Thank you for your support and understanding. I take my career very seriously and I am grateful to anyone who helps put an end to this.
Ryan Mills #167"
RIP Cycle News -
September 02, 2010
It’s difficult to not be filled with both anger and sadness after getting the news from my former co-workers yesterday afternoon that the plug had been pulled on Cycle News and that its death was imminent. Anger because it shouldn’t have ended like this, sadness because it did.
But the weekly motorcycle publication that has been a part of my life since my family moved to America in 1971 is gone. I read Cycle News as a child, as a teenager my name could be found periodically in its pages for my racing exploits at South Bay Speedway in San Diego, and as a fresh-faced young man I took a job there. And it was within the hallowed walls of the then Cycle News offices on Signal Hill in Long Beach that I grew up and became a man. Up until last week, my two children, now adults at 18 and 21, had never known their father to work anywhere else.
I was told last night that I should feel vindicated with the publication going out of business just a week after they let me go as the editor after a 25-year run, but I don’t. I knew this day was coming. I just didn’t know it would come so quickly. When pushed to the point where I lost my temper on the way out the door last week, I predicted they’d be out of business in three weeks. I guess betting the under would have won someone some money.
I can sit here all day long and tell you how the company could have been saved, but what’s the point. You don’t hear people speak badly of the deceased in a eulogy and I’m not about to start the trend at Cycle News‘ funeral. The publication was like a good friend and the long list of people who worked there over my 25 years were like family members. Most went in different directions as time passed, but we were and always will be connected in some way through the times we spent at the smoky offices in Long Beach and the newer digs in Costa Mesa. And when I sit here and think about my times at CN, the good far outweigh the bad. And it is the memories of the people that still bring a smile to my face.
I wasn’t proud of every Cycle News that we printed, but I was proud of most of them. For the most part, the publication was put together each and every week by a staff that cared, a staff that often went above and beyond the call of duty to produce a newspaper that people liked, wanted and needed. And we normally did so without hearing much from the people above. Along the way we went to each other’s weddings, we saw each other’s children grow up and we even attended funerals together. We fought, we cried, we smiled and we celebrated together and through it all we produced our little publication that fed the needs of an industry. It was a family of people so big that old names and faces keep popping into my head as I sit here.
So where does it go from here? I’m not sure how these things work, but it concerns me. At this point I’m not sure I should give a damn, but I do. There’s a lot of history there… for every photo on a proof sheet that was chosen for publication and circled with a blue grease pencil, there are 35 other photos of equal importance. There are bound volumes of every issue ever printed, file drawers full of photos of heroes past and present. Of motorcycles from then and now. And I worry that whatever vulture that ultimately gets their hands on the remains won’t fully comprehend what it all means. I fret not for the things that will be saved, but for the things that will probably get trashed. I fear someone going through the wreckage who knows nothing of Dick Mann, of Giacomo Agostini, or of Kenny Roberts or Roger DeCoster.
I wanted to be a part of rehabiliating Cycle News, of bringing it back to life in a time much different from when it reached its zenith. But I was ulimately thwarted in my efforts and now it’s time to move on. I do so knowing that I gave it everything I had.
So as I sit here this morning and struggle with the loss of a friend, I know there are several others out there who are feeling the same. No matter how their time at Cycle News ended, and a lot ended badly, the little weekly motorcycle publication that could probably remains a bigger part of their lives than they may want to admit to.
It’s gone now, but it will never be forgotten.

Round four of the 2010 Northern Cup Motocross Series visits the Wittenberg Off-road Raceway this Saturday. For those hoping for some track time prior to the race we've added a special Friday evening practice session that will run from 4 to 7:30 PM tomorrow. For the first time ever, the Wittenberg track will be run in the reverse direction. All the jumps have been turned around, refaced, tested and tweaked. Should be fun and another nice change for everyone in attendance.
We've also spent some extra time pumping out our holding ponds in order to avoid another track flooding like the one that resulted in a cancelled June race. Even with the possibility of some rain on Friday, all will be well for Saturdays race. For weather conditions, practice and race status sent to your pocket. Text the word MOTO to 313131 - this is our first and most effective way to inform you!
The cancelled June event is rescheduled to Tigerton on September 18th, making September 18 and 19 a double header event to wind down the 2010 Northern Cup Motocross Series Championships. The make-up event will NOT be D16 points, but it will pay NCM points. The Yamaha and Kawasaki contingency make-up date will be September 19th in Tigerton as well. More on the double header weekend in a later newsletter but we can tell you now - it is going to be a weekend of fun with the full length feature premier of "Perception" by Lucid films on a giant 25 foot screen at the Motozone! Live Music, golf cart racing, goon riding competition and more will fill the season finale!
And what about next weekend in Tigerton - well, that one is going to be a little precursor to the season finale. Saturday, Aug 28th will be practice from 10:30AM to 3:30 PM with the Round 5 of the NCM on Sunday. We may just break out the golf cart racing and a little goon riding competition next weekend as well - and what the hell - why not some pit bike racing too! All the fun begins on Saturday, Aug 28th! Yamaha, Kawasaki, Fly Racing and Amsoil are all paying contingency next weekend as Tigerton as well.
Hope to see everyone this weekend for the "backwards" running Wittenberg event. Safe travels and keep it on two.

Gene Simmons (born Chaim Witz [Hebrew: חיים ויץ, pronounced /ˈxɑːjɪm/] on August 25, 1949) is an Israeli-American rock bassist, vocalist, actor, and businessman.
After arriving in the U.S., young Chaim Witz took the name Eugene Klein (later Gene Klein), Klein being his mother's maiden name. In the late 1960s, he changed his name to Gene Simmons to honor legendary rockabilly performer Jumpin' Gene Simmons.
He is well known as "The Demon", the blood-spitting, fire-breathing, and tongue-wagging bassist and co-frontman in the hard rock band Kiss, a group he co-founded in the early 1970s. Simmons was placed twenty-ninth by Hit Parader on their list of the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Singers

Open practice in Wittenberg tomorrow from 3-8 PM. If interested in attending the Chad Johnson Motocross school earlier in the day please contact Chad direct at 715-360-3535 he still has room for a few more people.
We will also have a bike only open practice this Saturday, July 24th, from 3-6 PM. (Earlier in the day we are hosting the Badger State Quad Series.)
Sunday is round 4 of the Northern Cup Motocross Series featuring contingency from Yamaha, Kawasaki, Amsoil and Fly Racing.
We once again have a lot of industry certificates and promotional giveaways lined up for Sunday. No big track changes for this event, just tweaking all of the changes made earlier in the year. All of the new dirt has now had plenty of time to "settle" so we will not suffer from some of the spongy jump faces that plaqued the first race in Wittenberg.
Hope to see everyone out for a great weekend in Wittenberg and if your travels take you elsewhere, good luck!

For any coolant and anytime you are changing coolant, we recommend a simple solution of distilled water and white distilled vinegar, both available at your local grocery store.
1. Mix the water/vinegar at 50/50 2. Fill system with the solution 3. Run engine until warm 4. Let cool 5. Drain 6. Run clear water through to rinse out vinegar. 7. Fill with coolant of choice.
This is the same as cleaning your coffee maker. The vinegar is acidic enough to clean out and contaminants and residual coolants, yet it won’t harm your seals and gaskets.

Deep Thoughts from Mr Brad Day -
May 26, 2010
Does every new generation entering moto believe they have to save it from the old guard and make it their own? 70's it was us against them (Euros) 80's had the established riders and newbies with ideas (double jumps.) 90's developed into the hey look at me era. Trying to gain mainstream approval. oh and neon clown outfits. 00's Status symbol; pit presence motorhomes golf carts and budget busting bike builds. Now entering a new decade we find the safety police wanting to control track design and conditions. Has anything changed for the better? Are we truly better off than we were sitting in a field shooting each other with fire extingushers(70's power washer) waiting for our buddies moto so we could clean out his cooler while he raced. Loading too many bikes and people into a van. And howling at the moon during BBB. I don't moto much anymore but I still ride with some of the old guys and it still feels like the old days. Yet when I venture back to the track it just feels like something is missing......

4 Days til the LL Qualifiers this weekend!
This track is Killer 2 days of Racing and you don't have to be qualifying to for LL to race.
As far as riders these days, they pretty much don't have a clue where MX came from, who paved the way, how good they have and most of 'em don't really care. The people running the sport are worse because they know better, but it has become a free for all money making machine. Every jump is sponsored, every rider has a posse of clueless people making demands and suggestions that don't make sense and the people that do speak up and make the rules all have agendas which have nothing to do with positive growth for the sport. Tracks are terrible, bikes are ridiculous, training is way over rated, drugs both recreational and enhancing are common place and supercross tracks are dangerous for riders and boring for fans. MX is tumbling out of control like an astroid with nobody smart and powerfull enough to steer it.
Team managers need to get together and have some sort of salary cap. The factories can't really afford the salaries these days and they don't want to shell out the money to do the outdoors anymore. Riders are lazy and don't really feel like doing them either if they can make the same money to just ride supercross and a few extra events like US Open, X-Games and a eoro race or two. This is horrible for MX, but nobody wants to do anything for fear of stepping out of line and lose their job or have to actually work for their living.
Tracks need to change drastically. A SX track has two gnarly whoop sections that take balls and the best suspension available, the two triples are dumb and one of ''em is usually right off the start and dangerous, the rythm sections are do or die causing most riders to lay up and the step on step offs are stupid and dangerous and don't make racing any better. So approximately 6 times per lap riders are shitting bricks, or at least in danger of a 4-stroke popping and causing them to eat shit ala Marshall. You do about 40 laps on the weekend and a ton during the week which gives you lousy odds of making it through a season. Tracks have to change, and in doing so injuries will be fewer, horsepower will be less important because the speeds will come down and technique will replace balls. As it stands, riders are rewarded to be lazy, slower, less fit by being paid by the energy drink companies and factories. It's all a wad of shit and heading downhill fast. It's not even the same sport anymore and riders just do what they have to do to get by because they make a good enough living that way. As long as laziness is being rewarded, you will have 2 or 3 guys winning everything because they have higher standards, bigger egos or less fear. The rest are just happy to be there
Injuries and wheelchairs at the races are growing in numbers to a scary rate. The riders that are hurt is much more than necessary and sx trickles down to test tracks, private practice tracks, outdoor tracks and so on. Right now Fonseca in a chair for life, Ricky James in a chair for life (who was on his way to becoming fast! just like Stroup) Nick Wey is hurt, Vuillemin is hurt, Dungey is hurt, Stewart is hurt, Preston is hurt, Lawrence is hurt, Hepler missed most of the season and all of last, Millsaps is out and a few others I'm probably forgetting. Plus, Reed is completely over it because he is fairly smart and sees this the way I do. Several of Europe's best are skipping the Des Nations because of injuries. When I was racing, who was hurt? Nobody. If somebody got hurt it was big news and he usually one missed one race. I won the sx title in 83 and missed Dallas due to a broken foot and sprained ankle, but that was about as bad as it got. Imagine Dungey and Lawrence back out there with Hepler and Metcalfe in there the whole series, or in the 450 class, put Stewart, Reed, Vuillemin, Milsaps, Preston and Wey. Way better racing! More riders to see and get a signature from while roaming the pits. More riders out there to lift the pace a little more etc.
There are a lot of problems, but those are the main ones and has produced crap

Not such a Good Friend -

WAUSAU (WAOW)-- Many of us eagerly dish out money for girl scout cookies. Sadly, some of that money might be in the hands of a thief. A Wausau woman is accused of stealing hundred of dollars from a local girl scout.
Selling cookies is 7 year-old Virginia Bauer's favorite part of Girl Scouts. This year, she sold 266 boxes of cookies. But now, her sales list is all she has to show for it.
"I was so happy when I sold the Girl Scout Cookies. I got to play in anybody's yard, but then it got stolen and I was very, very sad," says Bauer.
Bauer's mother, Katie Bedwell, says the theft happened last Thursday when she left her three daughters in the car with her best friend. Inside the car, she stored proof of her daughter's hard work, her cookies sales list and more than $800.
That money is now missing and Bedwell blames her friend. It's a huge disappointment for Bauer.
"I told my mom that I didn't even want to go to girl scouts anymore," says Bauer.
Bedwell says her friend was the only other person who had access to her car and she knew where Bedwell kept the money.
"She made a remark about 'Oh, you have that much money? Let's go shopping,' so that's another key give away that it was her," says Bedwell.
According to police, her friend made contradictory statements. They say she first denied the theft, then agreed to pay it back. Bedwell says she never imagined a friend would steal from her child.
"It was very disappointing that a friend for 6,7 years could turn around and destroy the life of a seven-year-old child."
The case is now in the hands of the District Attorney. The suspect has a criminal background, that includes issuing worthless checks. She has not been charged, so Newsline Nine is not releasing her name.

Although many people have an urge to make the story about Glen Helen dropping off of the AMA National schedule into a classic tale of good and evil—it was for the most part a business deal that didn’t work out (and, yes, there were a lot of different points of disagreement that would have had to have been worked out).
Yet, in its simplest terms, Glen Helen wanted a long-term contract before they would commit to holding another National. You can’t blame them. It is a big investment, much larger than what the cellar dwellers on the internet could ever comprehend, and without a guarantee that he will be holding a race the following year, a promoter could lose his shirt if there was a rain storm, earthquake, tornado, wind event or other crowd killing catastrophe. If you don’t believe that, ask the promoters who held AMA Nationals in 2009 during major thunderstorms. There is even one East Coast National that failed to pay the money they owed on time.
As for facility upgrades at the track: Glen Helen has added immensely to its facility in the last few years; including a two-story sign-up building (that the AMA uses at the National); there are three separate permanent restrooms at Glen Helen (one in each of the towers and the original one near the starting gate, plus Glen Helen brings in 200 port-cans on race weekend and meets all the MX Sports requirements for water bibs and porta-cans in the pits), Glen Helen also built an elevated viewing platform, separate announcer’s tower and added a second paved road into the track from the back (which comes from a massive parking lot with free parking). Glen Helen also has eight acres of flat pits and a separate, air-conditioned building for timing and scoring. Glen Helen was also the only track to comply with MX Sports’ request to build a bike washing area for all the bikes at the National (after it was built, MX Sports said that since no one else built one that it wouldn’t be used). Glen Helen was also the only race track in the USA to donate to the Danny "Magoo" Chandler Van Fund. Did everyone forget that Glen Helen opened it pits up for free in 2009? Other tracks charged up to $20 for a pit pass! Additionally, Glen Helen builds a new racetrack every year and fences it on both sides to allow the fans to get as close to the action as possible (this costs Glen Helen $50,000 and few if any tracks on the National circuit redesign their tracks every year).
What is true is that Glen Helen fought hard not to knuckle under to the AMA’s Steve Whitelock’s or MX Sports’ John Ayers’ “smooth track” concept (and every AMA National track owner should continue to fight against this stupid idea). And although harsh words were spoken every year, especially last year when John Ayers, and John Ayers alone, decided to put a Monster Arch on the landing ramp of a jump, the track was not a factor in the contract talks. Davey Coombs said on Thursday, “It had nothing to do with the track– Jody builds a very dynamic, spectacular track, and I asked him before about building some more in the future. Losing the race course itself is the most regrettable part of this development.”
So, the real issues on the demise of Glen Helen’s National program really boiled down to the length of the contract. Many other AMA National tracks had four-year deals. Glen Helen only had a deal for 2010, with no guarantee for 2011 or beyond. With another SoCal racetrack telling everyone who would listen that they were getting the Glen Helen date in 2011, it became obvious to Glen Helen owner Dr. Bud Feldkamp that MX Sports had no intention of renewing the contract after May 29th, 2010. Thus, Glen Helen pushed for a long-term deal. As an AMA National and FIM Grand Prix track (and the track that donated its use to save what was left of the ill-fated Competition Park MXDN in San Jacinto; honoring every MXDN ticket and holding the World Cup event so that teams that were stranded in America could have a race), Glen Helen felt that being the only National on the circuit not to have a long-term contract was a slap in the face.
Davey Coombs said on Thursday, in answering an email, “...for what it's worth, the one-year extension was the same one that a track in Pennsylvania got.” This is true, but actually false. MX Sports runs the track in Pennsylvania in question (Mt. Morris) and has already decided to drop Mt. Morris off the 2011 schedule because of disputes with the land owner. Thus, the one-year extension at Mt. Morris is not comparable to the one-year extension at Glen Helen.
So, when MX Sports refused to extend Glen Helen’s National contract, Glen Helen assumed that MX Sports had already committed, at least in principle, to the other track in question for 2011 (Pala).
"This was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we simply were not able to come to contractual terms with Glen Helen Raceway," said Davey Coombs. "By moving the date to September 11, we will have time to find a suitable venue. Riders, teams and fans are making travel plans now and we want them to feel secure that we will have an exceptional venue ready in Southern California. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change."
Leading up to the eventual outcome, Glen Helen, Hangtown and Washougal sought legal counsel (together) to resolve issues with MX Sports. The Hangtown group is not a favorite of MX Sports (nor vice versa), but it is reported that they got some of what they were asking for. Washougal, on the other hand, felt that they were on the chopping block for 2011—thus, they joined with Glen Helen and Hangtown as a group. Hangtown, for its part, did not stick with the group, but instead took the MX Sports compromise deal and dropped out of their “one-for-all” agreement with the other two tracks. It wasn’t the bravura move that you would expect from the Dirt Digger MC, but it happened. As for Washougal, that deal hasn't been decided yet. But Washougal feels that its days are numbered with MX Sports (and with talk of more Nationals at automobile tracks in the future), they wanted to fight now instead of getting the axe later (and alone). Perhaps, Glen Helen dropping out will get them a contract extension. We'll see.
As Davey Coombs said, “Change is never easy. Glen Helen's decision to cancel their 2010 National over the length of their new contract is as surprising as it is disappointing. It leaves us no choice but to move forward and find a new facility in Southern California. I feel bad for the fans of Glen Helen, as well as the ones who have already made travels plans for Memorial Day weekend.”
The reason that few people heard about what was transpiring was because contract talks are private until a resolution of some kind is reached. There was always the possibility of some kind of agreement. And, if the media had reported on this issue a week ago, it would have said that Hangtown, Glen Helen and Washougal were all going to pullout of the 2010 AMA Nationals. That would have been inaccurate—because negotiation take many twists and turns. Thus, nobody involved said anything in hopes that it would all work out. It should be noted that several leaks caused rumors to spread that actually impacted the contract talks—it is obvious that the rumors tainted the opinion of Glen Helen against the true intent of MX Sports’ position.
No one conspired to ruin the sport. MX Sports and Glen Helen had a difference of opinion, and based on the available evidence, they negotiated with their ultimate goals in mind. It didn’t work out.
This is also not about a battle between MXA and Racer X. Apart from the fact that I design the Glen Helen National track and have for 15 years, MXA has nothing to do with the management of Glen Helen (although we do race there all the time). Davey and I meet often to discuss issues of interest about the Nationals (we just had lunch two months ago). I am often at odds with Davey (particularly on the smooth track concept, moto length, track length, timed qualifying and limiting pro rider entries), but we normally state our opinions, agree to meet again when he’s in town and move forward. I don’t see how either magazine benefits from the AMA National series getting a black-eye.
On a side note: It is refreshing that neither Glen Helen nor MX Sports are attempting to trash each other in their press releases. The Nationals will continue and Glen Helen will most likely find another high-profile event for their facility.

The 1974 & 75 cyl have the same external casting. The 1974 cyl has only four transfer ports plus the exhaust and intake. The 1975 cyl has a boost port in the rear transfer port that dumps fuel out of a small port that exits right above the intake port. The 1974 CR125's had very fine threads on the cyl studs to mount the head and on the case,s to mount the jug (these fine thread nuts are no longer availible from Honda!), the 1975 & 76 cyl had the standard 8mm x 1.25 threads on the studs. The 1976 cylinder has a noticibly larger outer casting and fin area at the top but the same mounting area at the base, the 1976 cylinder also has a MUCH thicker liner that will not fit in the 74/75 case's, this was due to the fact that Honda used the same outer casting for the new MR175 and needed the sleeve area big enough to accept the 125 or 175cc liner for either bike it was being used for in production. With that being said you must also know that the same base gasket will fit on all years without the jug mounted but that the 76/77/78 cases have a much wider opening front to back to accept the bigger cylinder.
An unruly airplane passenger was taken into custody at Miami International Airport after he allegedly threw a luggage cart at an airport employee and punched a cop.
Miami-Dade police said about 2:25 a.m. Michael Jones, 43, started causing a ruckus in the baggage area of Concourse H. For reasons that have not been made clear, Jones allegedly attacked the airport employee who worked at the facility as a plumber. Jones allegedly threw a luggage cart at the man, punched him and then reportedly attacked another airport worker.
When a police officer arrived at the concourse he ordered the Pennsylvania man to "lay on the ground". Jones reportedly punched the officer. Four more police officers arrived came to the first officer's assistance, using a Taser Jones five times before they had the situation under control.
Jones was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, assault and resisting arrest with violence.
There are alot of clues but the easiest is Micky Dymond #43
In 1985 he was on a Husky and 1987 he'd be running the #1
Jeff Leisk #203 is a give away too

Hello everyone
Grant's crash Saturday night left him unconscious for two to three minutes. As a result he will not be cleared to race next Saturday night at Toronto. He has also suffered a bruised rib cage and a contusion to his right lung, causing him to cough up blood. We also think that the hard impact to his back, that caused the contusion to his lung, is the reason he was unable to move his legs at first. This is why the officials red flagged the race, he was laying on the blind landing in a high speed section and unable to move. Grant's knee is also extremely swollen. He will be going in to visit his Doctor this week to see if surgery is necessary. In general Grant is very banged-up, bruised and swollen; but our initial scare from him not moving his legs after the crash are fortunately relieved.
On behalf of Grant and the rest of our family, we would like to thank everyone for their prayers and concerns. All the calls, texts and facebook messages really showed Grant how truly loved he is by friends and fans alike.
I will continue to keep everyone posted as we learn more about Grant's state."
"I watched it from the quad until it was over. Barcia cut davalos off after the quad then again in the next turn. Very intentional the second time. They slowed and rode side by side through the mechanics area. Davalos pushed barcia with his left hand. Barcia rode back up beside davalos after the finish and davalos grabbed his chin bar and pointed his finger in his face"
